Cross-border capacity calculation enhancement by updating and upgrading current AI platform

World region: Europe

Sector: Transmission system operation

Year: 2021 – 2022

Impact: Enhanced cross-border capacity

Summary

The integration of European power markets across Europe is delivering large gains for European consumers. However, some borders are underutilized commercially in market situations that were not common in the past. We carried out a comprehensive tool reengineering to facilitate long term maintainability that allowed to easily add the new features required.

The integration of European power markets across Europe is delivering gains for European consumers in the range of €34 billion per year. However, some borders are still underutilized commercially especially in market situations that were not common in the past but are becoming more frequent among other regions due to the development of renewables.

The existing solutions were designed for market situations where power flows on some borders were always in the same direction, in recent years flows frequently had reversed its direction, and sometimes were even just transiting the country. The solution in use had slowly been growing over many years, employing to some extent legacy technology and reassessing the development strategy was needed.

We carried out a comprehensive tool reengineering to facilitate long term maintainability allowing to more easily add the new features required in the project and also facilitate the adoption of new technologies in the future.
